Prosperity in east London: A citizen’s view
14-20 July, 2023 Applecart Studios, Newham
Prosperity in east London: A Citizen’s View explored what prosperity meant from the perspective east London residents themselves. Held at Applecart Arts Theatre, the exhibition showcased work by local residents trained as Citizen Social Scientists through UCL’s Institute for Global Prosperity, in collaboration with artist Alaa Alsaraji.
Drawing on the Prosperity in east London 2021–2031 Longitudinal Study, the exhibition moved beyond traditional economic measures to highlight lived experiences of regeneration. Through textiles, prints, and immersive installations, it brought attention to issues such as housing inequality, racism, mental health, and community safety.
Visitors were invited to engage directly with the work through discussions and interactive elements, contributing their own reflections for policymakers. The exhibition ultimately demonstrated the value of combining research, art, and community voices to challenge dominant narratives and reframe prosperity as something defined by dignity, inclusion, and collective wellbeing.
